CVCOA Stands Up for the Rights of Older Adults on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness. CVCOA joins the global movement to unite communities in raising awareness about elder abuse and the impact it has on the quality of life of our most vulnerable citizens.
Elder abuse remains widely under-recognized and under-reported. It can take many forms, including physical, psychological, and financial abuse, as well as neglect. It often occurs in situations where individuals lack visibility, support, or access to services.
Older people are mistreated more often than we think due to the lack of supports in our communities. It doesn’t have to be this way.
CVCOA Executive Director Casey Winterson says, “CVCOA remains steadfast in our mission to support Central Vermonters as they age with dignity and choice. As part of this commitment, we provide educational resources and support to help keep our friends, families, and neighbors safe from elder abuse. Across the United States, 1 in 6 adults over the age of 60 experienced some form of abuse last year. CVCOA is committed to being a safe and trusted resource for those affected by elder abuse. We will continue to support victims and survivors by providing access to assistance, connection to resources, and encouraging reporting so that older adults can live safely and with the respect they deserve.”
CVCOA has created this short video to educate people on the signs of elder abuse and what to do if it is suspected. Watch to help protect yourself and your community.
