Wellness Programs

Healthy aging enables older adults to live vital, active lives in their homes and communites. CVCOA encourages seniors to exercise, eat a healthy diet, and be proactive about their health.

Our senior centers, N2N AmeriCorps members, and hospitals offer a variety of exercise and wellness, including nutrition, programs. These include:

Exercise Programs

Bone Builders is a free program focusing on strengthening bones, improving balance and feeling better. The focus is on strength training through the use of light free weights and body weight. The program also uses balance exercises to enhance agility and decrease the likelihood of falls. Flexibility exercises enhance joint mobility  and reduce risk of injury. To learn more about starting a class in your town, transportation to or to register for training, contact Dan Noyes, RSVP Coordinator, at dan@volunteervt.com or 888-2190.

Living Strong helps elders maintain their independence by increasing strength, muscle mass and bone density while preventing, delaying or aiding in the self-management of exsisting chronic diseases. It is a strength training program using light weights. Living Strong is offered twice weekly in 12-week cycles to adults 50 and older.

Matter of Balance emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the risk and fear of falling. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable; set realistic goals to increase activity; change their environment to reduce fall risk factors; and exercise to increase strength and balance. A Matter of Balnce includes eight two-hoir sessions for a small group led by a trained facilitator.

Other exercise programs include: walking, yoga, Wii bowling and more. Check with our local senior centers for more information.

Health and Wellness Programs

Healthier Living Workshops are ofered as part of the Vermont Blueprint for Health. They're free and have been designed to add vitality to the lives of those with chronic diseases. For individuals with arthritis, asthma, heart disease and other chronic illnesses, the six-week classes provide tools for better dealing with frustration, fatigue and pain. They also help improve strength, flexibility and endurance as well as managing medications, healthier eating and improving communications with family, friends and health care providers. Past participants report increased energy, reduced stress, more self-confidence and fewer doctors' visits as a result.
